Family Beach Vacations CaliforniaSan Diego offers the best family beach vacations in California. This time of year, July – October, offers the warmest weather, and is the best time to visit the beaches in San Diego CA. July and August are popular vacation months, which means the beaches and theme parks are more crowded, but you also get extra activities such as free summer concerts, and longer hours and extra shows at the SoCal theme parks. September and October are quieter, and more popular with the local crowds.
Best San Diego BeachesHere are the best family-friendly beaches in San Diego area.
Coronado City Beach. The wide beach with its stunning view of San Diego Bay, is set in upscale Coronado, and is home of the world famous Hotel del Coronado. Coronado Beach is rated one of the top ten beaches in the world. If we had to choose one as the best beach in San Diego California, Coronado Beach would be it.
La Jolla Shores - A visit to best California beaches should include a visit to La Jolla, an upscale beach community in San Diego. La Jolla Shores Beach had many fun activities in San Diego, including swimming, surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving and bodyboarding. Located off of La Jolla Bay, it offers the clearest water and gentlest waves in San Diego. UCSD and Scripps Birch Aquarium are nearby.
Del Mar City Beach - Del Mar, home of the Del Mar racetrack, is just north of San Diego. Families love the Del Mar City Beach, with the deep sandy beaches and nearby grassy parks. At the north end are two dog beaches.
Pacific Beach - If you want to be where the action is, P.B., is the place to be, a fun beach community. A narrow boardwalk lines the beach and is full of skateboarders, roller bladers, joggers and bike riders. Pacific Beach and nearby San Diego Gas Lamp district have the hottest nightclubs and best San Diego restaurants.
Mission Beach - We love Mission Beach in San Diego because it is so much fun! A great beach, theme park, and large park all in one place, just south of Pacific Beach. This beachfront playground has nice sandy beach bordered by a long seawall and cement boardwalk, with nearby Belmont Park and Mission Bay Park. Seaworld is nearby in Mission Bay Park. For families looking for fun activities in San Diego, Mission Beach is a great choice.
Ocean Beach - This friendly, comfortable beach has lots of sand, surf, and a long boardwalk. At the north end is the original San Diego Dog Beach, open 24/7 for unleashed dogs and dog lovers.
Oceanside Beach - one of the best San Diego beaches in north county, Oceanside Beach offers affordable family beach vacations in California. It is great for swimming and boogie boarding. Nearby is the California Surf Museum. Close to the Coaster train station.
Torrey Pines Beach - Torrey Pines State Beach is a large stretch of beach located in San Diego just north of La Jolla. The north end has several large parking lots and easy access, with restrooms and several lunch spots a short walk away. At the south end the bluffs are very scenic and the beach is popular for walking and running. At low tide you can walk down the beach and hike up the Beach Trail to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and enjoy the spectacular views.
Carlsbad State Beach - Carlsbad State Beach, also known as Tamarack Beach, has a walkway popular with skateboarders along a nice stretch of beach. At the north end is a sandwich place, and a few blocks away you will find many nice restaurants near Carlsbad Village Drive. Nearby attractions include Legoland and the seasonal Carlsbad Flower Fields. Close to the Coaster train station.
Moonlight Beach Encinitas - Moonlight beach is one of the popular beaches with locals in north county, located in Encinitas Cal. The beach is a great for family beach vacations! California is frozen in time in this charming beach town, famous for the surfing spots that line the 6 miles of beaches. Moonlight Beach has a snack shack on the beach, and is in walking distance to many restaurants and shops. You won’t want to miss the views at the Self Realization Fellowship temple, Swami’s surfing spot, or the nearby San Diego Botanic Garden. Close to the Coaster train station and the San Elijo beach campground.
Fletcher Cove - Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach is a small cove popular with locals and tourists staying in nearby vacation rentals. Parking is free, there is a new playground on top, and if you get hungry you can grab a healthy lunch at the Naked Café across the street. At very low tide you can walk up or down the beach and explore the cliffs. Nearby are many fine restaurants, the Cedros shopping district and the Belly Up tavern. Close to public transportation (the Coaster train station).
Imperial Beach Home to the annual U. S. Open Sandcastle Competition (scheduled Sunday August 8 2010), Imperial Beach is said to have the best Calif. beach sand! The beach is located just south of San Diego and is ideal for swimming, jogging, sunbathing and surfing.
