Explore a San Diego Tide Pool
and Beach at Low Tide

Winter offers some great times to visit the San Diego beaches at low tide. Minus tide days, when tides are lower than average, are the best days for walking on remote beaches, exploring interesting rock formations, and visiting tide pools.

When are the low tides? You can view the online graphical tides , see the traditional tide tables , or a list of the best days and times to visit the tidepools . If you would like a free graphical tide pocket calendar for 2010 San Diego tides, with directions to the most popular beaches on the back, request a tidebook and I’ll mail one to you. I keep one in my car with the maps so I always have it with me.

Great Beaches at Low Tide

At low tide, you can run 6 miles from La Jolla Shores , past Black’s Beach to Torrey Pines State Beach. Along the way you will pass the tidepools north of Scripps Pier, which are great to explore. In North County, you can easily run the entire 6 miles on Encinitas beaches, taking you on a tour of Cardiff state beach, Pipes, Swamis, Boneyards, Moonlight, and Leucadia State Beach (past Stonesteps, Beacons and Grandview access points). OK, for those of you who don’t really want to run 12 miles round trip, pick a spot and walk north or south on the beach. Explore!

The La Jolla area is fun to explore at low tide. At Windansea beach, there are large rock formations to explore. At Children’s Pool, you can peer down into the clear water and see mussels, sea anemones and more. Both sites offer a romantic setting, especially at a low tide at sunset.

San Diego Tide Pools

What are tide pools? Tidepools are small collections of sea water in depressions in the sand or rock, usually found near the low tide line. If you look carefully you might find limpets, mussels, crabs, sea urchins, starfish, sea anemones or more. Take along a book to help identify what you find, and a camera if you like, but please be careful to not harm the sea creatures or their homes.

The most famous tide pools in San Diego CA are in Point Loma at the Cabrillo National Monument. We enjoy the tide pools just north of Scripps Pier in La Jolla. The tide pools are fantastic and as a bonus you get great views of the Torrey Pines cliffs, scenic Scripps Pier, and La Jolla Bay. Other good San Diego tidepools can be found in Ocean Beach, Swami’s, Tide Beach in Solana Beach, and San Onofre. If you prefer a guide while exploring the tidepools, both the Cabrillo National Monument and Birch Aquarium at Scripps provide docents at selected times.
