San Diego Whale Watching
From Land or Sea
Enjoy a day whale watching in San Diego. The whale watching season lasts from December to April, when you can see gray whales as they migrate along the San Diego coast to and from Baja California. These majestic creatures tend to migrate closer to shore during the early part of the season, so you can spot them from many areas around San Diego, or out on the water.
Here are some fun ways to go San Diego whale watching:
La Jolla Whale Watching Kayak Tour - Enjoy a guided kayak tour in the waters off La Jolla Shores and see some gray whales about a mile off shore at the edge of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve kelp beds. Catch a glimpse of the La Jolla sea caves, sea lions and harbor seals.
Torrey Pines State Reserve - Hike along the cliffs of Torrey Pines State Reserve, and you get a nice view of whales off shore. Enjoy the hike and spectacular views.
Naturalist Guided Whale Watching Boat Rides – Take a cruise and learn about whales, dolphins and the Pacific Ocean from an expert from the Birch Aquarium at Scripps with their half day excursions from the San Diego harbor.
Sailing Adventure - Sail aboard a replica of The America, a world famous racing sailboat, and see gray whales up close. The trip leaves from the San Diego Maritime Museum, which you can visit before or after your sailing trip.
Hornblower Whale Watch Curise - Enjoy a morning or afternoon cruise out of San Diego bay to see whales and dolphins. On the same day, you can visit the Maritime Museum, USS Midway, or the San Diego Natural History Museum at a discounted rate.
Scripps Birch Aquarium - Enjoy San Diego whale watching from the deck outside Scripps Birch Aquarium. Listen to the voices of different whales, including humpback, sperm, gray, blue, beaked and Northern right whales in a special exhibit Whales: Voices in the Sea.
Whale Watching from Shore - It’s fun to hike one of your local San Diego beaches and spot whales from shore. Go at low tide and you can watch for whales from the cliffs, and then walk along the beach at low tide.
